The Start to Finish Guide to Organizing Your Closet – Ideas And Tips
With a new season, comes a natural inclination to change things around the household. And as a real estate agent, I am often asked for guidance that transcends a real estate transaction, including how to better organize one’s wardrobe space. Prepping your closet for a new season takes a few hours of your time but is worth every minute invested. So before you rush out and shop for new pieces to elevate your wardrobe, consider paying your closet a visit.
Twice a year, I overhaul my wardrobe area. I start by taking everything out of the closet. After eliminating the dust and garbage, I apply the familiar “give away, toss, sell” approach to assess each piece before, it makes its way back into the wardrobe. This process can be overwhelming, thus planning is key. To accomplish what needs to get done in my closet, I set aside about 2 uninterrupted hours. When the time comes to clean, I turn up the music, grab a mug of coffee and go to work.
Make Room
Make sure you have a few garbage bags on hand and begin by removing EVERYTHING from your closet. You want to start with a blank canvas.
Assess Every Garment
As you review each article, ask yourself the following questions:
- Have I worn it in a year (0r tw0)?
- Does this piece work with my post-pandemic lifestyle?
- Is it time to replace it?
- Would I buy this piece today?
When you are uncertain if an item is a keeper, try the garment on. If a piece no longer fits, has holes, or no longer reflects your current lifestyle, consider letting go.
Sort Everything Into 6 Piles
- Keep
- Store
- Donate
- Resell
- Alter
- Garbage
Organize
Consider replacing all of your hangers with black felt hangers, or at least, hangers of the same type.
Once all your garments are back in the closet, consider grouping similar garments together; i.e.: skirts, pants, dresses. Colorizing your garments within their related categories will allow you to locate them much easier.
Accessories, Handbags, and Shoes
Organize or hang accessories, handbags, and shoes front and center.
Why? We only wear what is in plain sight.
To conserve space, consider putting off-season accessories, handbags, and shoes in storage bins to bring around when the season turns.
Final Tip:
Turn all of your hangers backward. When you remove something off the hanger to wear, turn the hanger around. After six months, you will see which clothes you don’t wear because the hanger will still face backward. At that point, determine if you wish to keep the unworn items or donate/resell them.
